Hi Moaters,

I have a superpower. Hand me a 50-page sales deck, and I'll give you back 12 slides that sell.

From investment banking to corporate development to product go-to-market, I've always been the sales deck guy. My rules haven't changed in 20 years:

  • Tell a compelling, convincing story.

  • Say what's uniquely valuable, as simply as you can.

  • Show me what I'm really buying. Real screens from the real product. Animations and mockups trigger me.

Lately, a lot of people tell me the sales deck is dying. AI does the research, buyers skip the meeting, so who needs slides?

I'd argue the opposite. The pitch meeting is shrinking, and the deck took over its job. It's the file buyers forward to their team and feed into AI to compare you with every other vendor. With every vendor sounding the same, it's often the only version of you the decision makers see.

That's a problem, because by my rough math, 9 out of 10 B2B sales decks I see are bad. Like really bad.

The good ones all do the same 4 jobs. I'll walk through each one below.

I also turned those 4 jobs into a FREE scorecard. It reads your B2B sales deck the way a buying committee would and tells you, in about 2 minutes, where it stands. Score yours now, or keep reading to see why the stakes went up.

Why it matters more now

A VP of Operations takes your call and likes what they hear. That afternoon, they forward your deck to the rest of the buying committee. Finance opens it to check the ROI. IT security looks for SOC 2. Procurement skips to pricing. Someone pastes it into ChatGPT and asks how you stack up against the other 2 vendors.

None of them saw your demo. Your deck is all they get. And 3 changes in how companies buy made this the norm.

1. Most of the deal happens before you show up. Buyers first talk to a seller about 59% of the way through the buying cycle. By then, 91% have already ranked their shortlist, and the early favorite wins 82% of the time. What they read before your first call decides where you rank.

2. The people who say no never met you. A typical decision now involves 22 people: 13 inside the buyer's company and 9 outside. And finance can kill a deal late. 49% of software buyers say their CFO reversed a deal the team had already approved in the past year. G2's advice to sellers is to give your champion "proof they can forward upward." Your deck is that proof.

3. AI helps them compare. 82% of buyers have sourced software recommendations from an AI chatbot in the last 2 years, and half say it mattered most when narrowing and comparing options. When a buyer asks AI to compare you, it works from what's public and what they paste in. Your deck is the part you control.

Your champion now gives your pitch for you, with your deck in hand. It has to sell without you.

Your B2B sales deck has 4 jobs

A deck that sells without you gets all 4 right:

  1. Make the case for change.

  2. Prove you're the answer.

  3. Make it safe to act.

  4. Sell without you in the room.

Most decks miss them in the same ways:

  • They brag. Headcount, office count, money raised. No buyer cares how big you are.

  • They list features, in a market already drowning in options.

  • They skip "why now" and dodge objections. Almost none show the cost of doing nothing.

  • They bury proof and ROI, the 2 things buyers weigh most.

  • They run long and drift, with a different message on every slide.

To fix it, build your deck from these 8 sections. They cover the 4 jobs, in the order buyers think:

Score your deck FREE

Last month, a growth-stage client asked me for a second look at their sales deck. It scored 45 out of 100.

In 48 hours, we rebuilt it: fewer setup slides, real product screenshots, and a clear comparison with the alternatives. The new deck scored 84. The team was incredibly impressed. More importantly, they sent it to a real prospect that same week.

That second look is now the B2B Sales Deck Scorecard, and it's FREE. I spent 6 weeks building it and testing it with half a dozen clients. It's one of the proudest things I've made.

A shout-out to the people who inspired it as my virtual mentors over the last 15+ years: Andy Raskin, Nancy Duarte and April Dunford.

Upload your deck. In about 2 minutes you get a score out of 100, the 3 fixes that move it most, and a full report slide by slide.

Your deck is never shared, published or used to train AI.

Do this week: If you want a B2B sales deck built for how buyers buy now, one that gets past a very skeptical buying committee, run it through the FREE scorecard.

Your deck sells in rooms you'll never enter. Build it for the people in them.

Til next time,

--Ali

P.S. Your deck gets passed around rooms you'll never see. This issue should too. Forward it to your sales, marketing and leadership team before your next big pitch, or to a founder who's about to send a deck to a big prospect. The scorecard takes them 2 minutes.
